Launching of Official OBA Blazer

at 5:45 pm at College Swimming Pool Premises

The OBA’s ‘Read & Return’ and Souvenir Shop was jointly declared open by the Principal, Mr. Trizvi Marikkar and Mr. Riza Abdeen , Immediate Past President of OBA earlier this week on the 25 th of November 2017, at the Swimming Pool complex.

Among the participants were Vice Principal, Mr. Ananda Ponnamperuma, Librarian Mrs Anoja, POG , Mr. Mushin Arif, BOG members – Mr. Alavi Mukthar, Mr. Hilal Sanoon and Mr. M .M. Mohamed and a number of distinguished guests, as well as all the affiliated group presidents and secretaries. The function commenced with Qirat recitation by Vice President, Mr. Rafeek Buhary.

Five smartly dressed young OBA members (Firdous, Yusri, Shiraz, Fariz and Riyaz) showcased OBA blazers and sports outfits, as well as their catwalk talents!

The launch is yet another feather on OBA’s cap, which was conceptualized by OBA members under the guidance of its charismatic President Mr. Azmi

The ‘Read & Return’ and Souvenir shop features a bookcase which encourages reading and practices free borrowing of books so as to foster the spirit of acquiring knowledge and education and freely as possible.

In his presidential speech, Mr. Azmi outlined the concept and reiterated the value of reading and its significance. He elaborated that reading is a critical part of children’s learning and mental growth, and acts as a doorway to imagination and discovery. Mr. Azmi advised parents to inculcate reading habits at a young age itself and recapped an important point by stating “Books to the children and not the children to the books” concept, so as to encourage and motivate the children to read more in acquisition of knowledge.

Mr. Azmi further pinpointed that a large stock of unsold souvenir items and memorabilia lying at the store could be marketed through this Souvenir Shop for OBA’s overseas branches. Lastly, Mr. Azmi remarked that this is the first time in OBA’s history, over 6 million LKR is lying in favour of OBA ’s bank account and he assured the Principal that the OBA will donate a substantial amount to purchase a new bus for the college.

The Principal, Mr. Trizvi Marikkar thanked the OBA for initiating the ‘Read & Return’ and Souvenir Shop project, and emphasized that finding the right book at the right time can light an emotional spark within a child that motivates them to read more and understand more. He suggested to keep the books freely available for access, and instructed the librarian to liaise with the OBA with the developments. Mr. Trizvi Marikkar further stated that the BOG (Board of Governors) has allocated more funds for the expansion of the library, in addition to constructing a fully-fledged two-storey library. The principal also confided that the BOG is envisaging to establish an Information Technology (IT) library and library labs for the benefit of the students.

Mr. Riza Abdeen, Immediate Past President, thanked the OBA for initiating the ‘Read & Return’ and Souvenir shop where income could be generated by selling all those unsold items. He emphasized to have a proper control and maintenance system.

Mr. Akram Mowlana, secretary of OBA profusely thanked all the members who had rallied around to make this project a resounding success.

The project chairman, Mr. N. M. Shiraz, who is a dynamic go-getter, delivered the vote of thanks. He sincerely thanked each and every member of the OBA for their unstinting support to make this project a reality. He especially thanked Mr. Faizel, swimming pool manger and his team, for the orderly arrangements.

A scrumptious spread borrowed from “Bhai” cuisines – Memon Rotti, Pau Ban, Punjabi Samosa, Hydrebad Chicken, Dhal fry and Gulab Jamun, was served and organized by OBA, Internal Auditor, Mr. Anver Bhai.

This colourful event was compered professionally in an inimitable manner by Mr.Haaziq Jaleel, yet another young rising star of Zahira, as well as a budding Toast Master.
